Partners in Tiger Conservation: WWF-Malaysia and Maybank's Ongoing Efforts Since 2016
WWF-Malaysia and Maybank have been working together to protect tigers in the Royal Belum Forest Complex since 2016. This partnership has led to important successes, such as Royal Belum State Park becoming the first site in Malaysia and Southeast Asia to receive the Conservation Assured | Tiger Standards (CA|TS) accreditation. They have also reduced threats to tigers by deactivating 238 active snares and training the Orang Asli community as rangers to enhance wildlife protection.
In 2024, the partnership renewed its commitment to tiger conservation. Their efforts focus on protecting tigers, monitoring their populations, increasing prey availability, empowering local communities, and maintaining high conservation standards. With fewer than 150 Malayan tigers left in the wild, these initiatives are crucial for creating a balanced ecosystem where wildlife and local communities can thrive.
The Belum-Temengor Forest Complex is vital not just for tigers but also for other large mammals and bird species. This makes it a key area for maintaining biodiversity. Beyond saving tigers, WWF-Malaysia and Maybank aim to restore natural balance in the forests and enrich the lives of local communities. Ongoing support is essential to continue these efforts and ensure a future where both humans and wildlife can coexist harmoniously.
